Winner of the July competition is…

July 30, 2012 in Blog by Ondrej

Winner Cup for jimmyjames@sbstep! Congratulations! There is finally someone who beat @jimmyjames :) @sbstep joined us in the middle of the competition and he (I’ll go with “he” since his name says Seth) managed to quickly gather points. The victory was very close this month and it looked like there would be a tie. The rules say that in this case, an email is sent with one final screenshot that decides who’s the winner. @jimmyjames amassed 7 points total and @sbstep eventually pulled off 9 thanks to back guessing previous posts.
I have to say I’m impressed by @sbstep, he knew almost everything, even stuff like Suicide Club or Doom Generation that I thought would remain unguessed. On the other hand pretty obvious stuff like Futurama: Into The Wild Green Yonder was not recognized. This leads me to another fantastic thing that happened this month, out of the 19 total screenshot posts, 17 were guessed so I’m very happy that the website is active, thanks to our two aforementioned members (no one else joined the competition this month unfortunately). I’m looking forward to August competition that will be announced soon (members will get information in the email in few hours or so).
Again thank you all for coming here and congrats to @sbstep to his 25 bucks.

25-07-2012 guessed by @sbstep: Suicide Club (2001)

This movie is purely bizzare but I put it amongst one of my favorite movies. Sure it’s not the stuff I’d rewatch every year but every three or four. I stumbled upon it in my Plex library this tuesday and only snapped the pictures for competition. I decided that I’m gonna watch it again, probably next week so I can’t really put in-depth review in here now.

Suicide Club or Jisatsu Sakuru came out in 2001, long before I had any interest in asian cinema. The idea behind the film is pretty surreal, a series of voluntary suicides emerge among the nation and nobody really knows where it came from. Mystery behind this “suicide club” is being uncovered by a detective with his own stakes in the game. The film strongly reminds me of Twin Peaks, with asian cruelty thrown in – the weirdness comes from blending aggressive scenes with happy motifs resulting in a very unique world. Four years later, the same director – Shion Sono, created Noriko’s Dinner Table which is loosely connected to the events in Suicide Club and retains some of the qualities of the first movie, unfortunately it feels watered down compared to it.

If you are a fan of movies that make you feel disturbed I greatly recommend this one, it is very original mix of horror, splatter film, musical and detective thriller.

Film is available only on DVD for $12.58 or on Instant Video for $2.99.

This movie is very dear to my heart as I saw it like million times when I was a kid – the good old VCR days. The tape copy had czech language dubbed over the original – a practice very common in our country. It wasn’t even original but copied over from the rental company so it had “nice” fuzzy picture. The story follows a gang of young kids (“The Goonies” from Goondocks) that want to save their homes from evil corporation (or evil estate developers, whatever). Each of the kids is an archetype of certain personality: the main kid Mikey (Sean Astin also Sam from Lord of the Rings) is lovable underdog/hero, Chunk is a funny fat kid, Mouth (Corey Feldman who I mentioned in License to Drive) is the groups’ comedian, Data is a nerd etc. We also have Josh Brolin as the annoying yet good at heart older brother.
The group manages to find a map in Mikey’s parents attic, a lead to pirates’ treasure – something that would allow them to buy back their properties and become awfully rich. However they’re not the only one after the treasure. I’m not gonna say more, you should watch it yourself. The film is somewhat disneyish, most of the characters are simplified to fit a cliche but that doesn’t make the movie any less enjoyable. It’s very well written kids movie which I dare to say can still be enjoyed by the new generation – it has all the essential parts: memorable characters and their quotes, suspense, adventure and yes – there is some romance thrown in.
Much to its appeal can be credited to two great creators behind The Goonies: writer Steven Spielberg who did E.T. of course, so he has an experience in that department. Another one: the director of the movie is 80s darling Richard Donner, the master behind action classics such as Lethal Weapon and Superman series, on top of that he rode on the “satan” wave of 70s with Omen. His newest creation is Timeline, a book adaptation by Michael Crichton which I read and enjoyed, only to be disappointed by watching the movie on DVD few years later.

If any of my readers grew up in 80s or has some nostalgia left in his heart – you’ve got to watch this. If you don’t enjoy it, you get to listen to Cindy Lauper at least. The Goonies can be bought on DVD for $8.59, Blu-Ray (25th Anniversary Edition) for $29.95 and watched on Amazon Instant Video for $2.99.
